In the digital age, our lives are undeniably intertwined with screens. Whether for work, education, or leisure, we often find ourselves in front of digital devices for extended periods. As a result, more people are experiencing digital eye strain or screen fatigue, a condition characterised by tired, irritated eyes, blurred vision, and headaches. Here's how to protect your eyes and mitigate the effects of screen fatigue.



Understanding Screen Fatigue

Screen fatigue, also known as computer vision syndrome, is a group of eye- and vision-related problems resulting from prolonged computer, tablet, e-reader, or mobile phone use. Symptoms include dry eyes, blurred vision, red eyes, eye discomfort, headaches, and neck and shoulder pain. The severity of these symptoms often depends on the individual's visual abilities and the amount of time spent looking at a screen.


Practical Steps to Prevent Screen Fatigue

  1. Follow the 20-20-20 Rule: To reduce strain on your eyes, every 20 minutes, look at something 20 feet away for at least 20 seconds. This simple rule allows your eyes to rest from the intense focus on close-up screen work.

  2. Adjust Your Workspace: Ensure your computer screen is positioned at an arm's distance away from your eyes and just below eye level. This setup reduces strain on your neck and eyes.

  3. Blink More Often: Blinking moistens the eyes, preventing dryness and irritation. When staring at screens, we often forget to blink, leading to dry eyes.

  4. Adjust Screen Brightness and Text Size: Your screen brightness should be balanced with your surrounding workstation brightness. Also, increase the text size to prevent squinting.

  5. Use a Blue Light Filter: Screens emit a significant amount of blue light, which can contribute to eye strain and interfere with sleep. Most devices now have a built-in feature to reduce blue light, or you can use a screen protector that filters blue light.

  6. Get Regular Eye Exams: Regular eye exams are crucial to detect and correct vision problems. If you're experiencing significant screen fatigue, it's advisable to consult an optometrist.

The Role of Eye wear

Special eye wear may also help alleviate digital eye strain. Computer glasses designed to optimise eyesight when viewing your computer screen can be beneficial. They have anti-reflective lenses that reduce glare and a tint that helps increase contrast for easier viewing.
